The Moon Landing - Yay? or Nay!

To my mind, humans landing on the moon is just about the coolest thing that has ever happened.  We left the earth’s surface and flew through space to an entirely different orb and WALKED on it. We played golf on it.  If we can do that, we can do literally anything!  I know that this belief came from my parents, who likewise thought the moon landing was amazing.  Apart from proving that anything is possible, the moon landing also served to advance science and our understanding of the universe.  Samples of the moon were brought back for analysis.  We can see what elements are on the moon and it turns out they are the same elements we have here!  The elements truly are the building blocks of the universe.  That’s so cool!

However, as an adult I have become aware that the space program was/is very expensive.  I could certainly see that people might feel that the money we spent sending men to the moon would have been better used if spent on resources for those in need.  That is a compelling argument.  I would definitely have trouble telling someone to their face that they had to starve so some dude could play golf on the moon.  When I did an online search for this, I see that it is now felt that the budget for the space program was not sustainable in the long-run and that national focus was moving on to things like the Vietnam War.  I can definitely understand that going to the moon would feel a little bit frivolous in comparison with discussions about a war.
