Technologies for Music Fans

1. Sound Recording: the invention of sound recording gave music fans the ability to listen to a piece of music performed by a certain performer in the comfort of their own home.  They didn't have to go to a concert nor did they need to have a piano and learn how to play the piece of music themselves.  You could listen to the song as many times as you wanted to.  Eventually, you wouldn't even need to purchase a record because of our next invention.

2. Radio: the invention of radio made it even easier for fans to hear their favorite musical artists.  Indeed, it became more likely that musical artists could even have fans that would never see them perform live because they lived at too great a distance.  In addition, a radio only required the initial outlay of the cost of the radio receiver and you would never need to make another purchase.  (Of course, you had no control over what you hear or when...)

3. MTV: In 1981 a new TV channel premiered, MTV (or Music Television), which would mainly show music videos.  (There had been assorted TV programs that would show music videos but never a channel whose 24 hour mission was just to show music videos.)  Now you could SEE your favorite musical artist as well as hear them.

4. Portable players: Although radio (and television) began as a thing that would be enjoyed simultaneously by a household, it eventually became something that you could take with you.  Cars because having radios as standard equipment.  There were transistor radios, as well, that an individual could take with them.  Then, in the 1980s, Sony invented the Walkman and we never looked back.  Music was now something you could always take with you and enjoy pretty much anytime.

5. Streaming Services: Eventually, people got tired of having to repurchase music in various formats (records, 8-tracks, cassette tapes, CDs, MP3s, etc.) and came up with the idea of streaming.  This way, you wouldn't need to own the music but you could still have control over what you listened to and when.

6. Microphones: This is a bonus because I feel that microphones benefit the performer as well as the audience.  Yes, it is easier to hear the performance but it also reduces strain on vocalists as well as increasing the size of the audience that can be accommodated.
