I've been helping my grandmother clean out the basement of her house in which she has lived since 1957. As you can imagine, there's quite a bit in the basement. I have been really excited about all of the family photos that we've found. (Less excited that they are mostly loose in boxes...) I volunteered to scan them all in, so we'd have copies no matter what. It is a time-consuming project, but one I am enjoying a great deal. I thought it would be fun to share some of the pictures that I've found.
This is a recent find and was actually in an album (!). Based on the other photos in the album, I figured this was taken around 1918 in Battle Creek and did some searching to find out that, yes, there was a big flood in Battle Creek that year. In fact, this was one of many floods, the last of which was in 1947. Apparently in the 1950s, city officials hired engineers to take steps to control the water in the area and there's been no more flooding since then. I really couldn't find that much out, which was disappointing.
