The Mallorca Files is a fish out of water story combined with a police procedural/light mystery. The main character, Miranda, starts the series on loan from the British police in order to bring a criminal back to England. He escapes and she is assigned a partner, Max, a detective on permanent loan from Germany, for the duration of the case. Miranda is a high strung, type A personality while Max is a loveable goofball who personifies the laid back Mallorca vibe. Hijinks ensue, although the case is ultimately solved successfully. The episode ends with Miranda on permanent assignment to Mallorca with Max as her partner. Other characters in the show include Max's girlfriend, Carmen, Chief Ines Villegas (who doesn't get along with Miranda), and Roberto (a goth CSI guy with a crush on Miranda).
We have watched the first two seasons of the show and are big fans. It is just the right tone of light mystery that isn't insulting to either the viewer or the genre. (Sometimes I really feel like tv mystery shows think that the whole concept of mysteries is something enjoyed only by morons who won't even notice when they are being made fun of. But I digress.)
The scenery in the show is just amazing. I think that people must fight to be on the crew of this show just so they can hang out in Mallorca. I'll be honest - Mallorca wasn't really on my travel radar prior to watching the show and now I'd really love to take a trip there.
My one quibble with the show is that they seem to be constantly setting up a romance with Max and Miranda. That would be fine with me except that they have also made Carmen, Max's girlfriend into a really great character. In addition, several scenes have been set in the bar where Carmen works, which is also owned by her father. I like them. I like the scenes at the bar. So I can't root for Max and Miranda as a couple. I'd prefer if we just dropped this subplot altogether.
So far, only two seasons of The Mallorca Files are available on DVD as well as streaming on Britbox. There is a third season that is available on Britbox only (so far). I highly recommend that you check it out.
