Real Genius Review

For the Film Critic/Film Lover badge, I need to review movies in various categories.  For my first, I chose to watch a comedy film: 1985's Real Genius, starring Val Kilmer.

The plot centers around 15-year old Mitch, who has been accepted into a prestigious California science college (think Caltech) and paired with a senior, Chris, played by Chris Knight, who is a legendary genius, but also wacky.  (He wears t-shirts with funny saying!  He wears bunny slippers to class!)  They are working on a prestigious laser project, along with three guys who seem so dumb I honestly wondered how they got into college let alone assigned to this project.

Unbeknownst to our heroes, the laser is a military project and will be used as a weapon.  Honestly, my only real complaint about the movie is that the main characters are astonished when they work out that the laser is going to be used as a weapon, which they only do, of course, after the laser is complete.  Like did you not once wonder what on earth the laser is for?  Also, didn't it seem weird that the professor in charge has these hard deadlines for the laser?  Most science projects can linger on for years, so it seems like this should have been a red flag.

The movie is great fun, though, overall.  The wacky college hijinks portrayed are pretty goofy and harmless.  The movie aged well, for the most part, too.   Very few (if any) jokes that now seem in poor taste.  I have no idea if any of the science portrayed is accurate, but my ignorance most likely added to my enjoyment.  If you are looking for a movie that is just a good time, give this one a try!
