| Buttermilk Dinner rolls, pictured sideways for some reason. |
This week I have made significant progress on my Baker badge. For this badge, there are 9 clauses to complete which ultimately results in 15 recipes made. I have completed 9 of these recipes (3 types of cookies, 3 types of cake, and - as of this week - three types of bread) and am halfway through the mille feuille, which is a multi-day process. I will finish that tomorrow. Earlier this week, I made strawberry shortcakes. Shortcakes are essentially biscuits with sugar in them so I counted them as a type of bread. And recently I had made both pumpkin and banana breads, examples of quick breads. The shortcakes used buttermilk to rise and the dinner rolls I made, although they included buttermilk as well, used yeast as their leavening agent. So three different types of bread attempted and successfully made.
You can find the buttermilk dinner rolls recipe in Back in the Day Bakery Made with Love by Cheryl Day. In researching this post, I was sad to learn that the Back in the Day Bakery closed earlier this year. While I never had a chance to visit them in person, I can say that I love both of their cookbooks.
I had hoped to make more progress on my Big Kid Summer Badge but so far this week we have only blown bubbles. It was a great deal of fun, though! And the bottle of bubble solution that we bought is HUGE so I am sure there is still much bubble blowing in my future. Soon, I hope we will find time to visit a carousel and/or a petting zoo, fly a kite, make a blanket fort, and make ice cream.
For my World Traveler badge, I elected to do clause 10, which asks one to engage in 3 activities traditional in other countries. For this, I worked on origami and paper cutting (which also both count for my craft badge) and Japanese Radio Exercises. Apparently, the idea of calisthenics over the radio originated in the US but have remained popular in Japan. Except for a brief interruption from 1945-1951, these exercises have been broadcast on NHK radio since 1928! We found a video on Youtube to try and, let me tell you, it was a good thing that there was a video component as even with visuals we had a hard time following along! But we had a really good time and the exercises were actually pretty good!
